The skin barrier: why it matters

The epidermal barrier is the protective system that helps the skin retain water and deal with external factors. It is not a vague term of aesthetics: the scientific literature describes physical, chemical, microbiological and immunological levels working together. When this balance is disturbed, the skin can become dry, sensitive or more reactive.

What signs deserve attention

Tightness after cleansing, persistent dryness, peeling, stinging with products you previously tolerated and a tendency to redness may suggest that your skin needs gentler care. These signs alone are not enough for a diagnosis and may be associated with different skin conditions.

Severe itching, pain, discharge, sores, rapid deterioration or persistent symptoms need assessment by a dermatologist. A skincare routine should not delay appropriate medical care.

What can put strain on the skin barrier

Too frequent cleansing, hot water, intense exfoliation and the simultaneous use of many active products can increase dryness and sensitivity. Cold, dry air, sun and friction also work cumulatively. Often the problem is not a single product, but the combination and frequency.

The skin does not constantly need more steps. When it reacts, temporary simplification helps to distinguish what is really useful and what adds unnecessary irritation.

A simple routine to support your skin

Start with gentle cleansing without strong fragrance and lukewarm water, then moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free products for dry, sensitive skin and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Choose a few products and introduce changes one at a time. Supporting the skin barrier does not necessarily require a complicated range of serums. A gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturiser and sun protection provide a clear foundation. The right texture depends on your skin type, the season and your skin’s tolerance.

Reintroducing active ingredients

Acids, retinoids and other active ingredients are not inherently bad, but they need to suit your skin and be used at an appropriate frequency. If your skin stings or peels, adding more active ingredients can make recovery harder. Reintroduce them gradually, one product at a time, while monitoring the response.

The current condition of the skin must be assessed before a more intensive aesthetic treatment. Sometimes a period of gentle care should come first, or the session should be postponed.

The essence of skin longevity

Skin longevity does not mean chasing perfection. It means consistent habits that protect skin function over time: gentle daily care, photoprotection, careful changes and professional evaluation when something persists. At Nous n Somma the treatment is selected after examining the condition of the skin and not only the desired goal.
