Radiofrequency or HIFU? What changes in practice?

The two technologies are not interchangeable: they differ in the way of application, the depth of targeting and the plan they require.

Radiofrequency and HIFU are both often described as “tightening” treatments, but they work differently. Radiofrequency delivers controlled heat to tissue through electromagnetic energy. HIFU uses focused ultrasound at predetermined depths. The choice should not be based on a broad label or the intensity promised by an advertisement.

Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency is usually delivered as a comfortable course of treatments, with response assessed over time. Sensation, temperature and safety depend on the device, settings and correct operation. There is no universal protocol for facial radiofrequency: frequency and intensity are set for the specific device and treatment area.

HIFU

HIFU targets focused points at specific depths; it is not simply a stronger version of radiofrequency. Indications, contraindications and operator training must be documented separately for the specific device.

How the choice is made

The choice takes into account the treatment area, tissue thickness and condition, your goal, previous treatments, implants, medical history and your ability to follow the proposed plan. No technology guarantees a specific result or replaces medical assessment when symptoms or a medical condition are present.

Sessions and timing of assessment

Radiofrequency is often planned as a series of treatments, with tolerance and response reassessed along the way. HIFU does not follow the same schedule because its mechanism and targeting differ. Final results cannot necessarily be assessed immediately, and a further treatment is not scheduled simply because change is not visible quickly. The interval depends on the device’s protocol, the treatment area and the judgement of an appropriately trained professional.

Questions worth asking

Ask which device will be used, the role of the practitioner operating it, what sensations to expect and which symptoms mean you should get in touch. Discuss possible reasons to postpone, the effect of previous procedures or implants, and aftercare. A responsible consultation also considers whether neither option is suitable.

The transparency policy

Before treatment, the exact device, technical specifications, safety features and the operator’s training must be established. Until these details are officially confirmed, we do not publish unverified claims about depth, power, certifications or comparative superiority. The aim is measured, gradual improvement, not a surgical result.

Frequently asked questions

This is not a like-for-like comparison. The mechanisms differ, and suitability depends on your goal, the treatment area and the specific device.
