There is no single number of sessions that suits everyone. Laser hair removal is planned as a course of treatments because not all hairs in an area are in the same growth phase at once. Assessment therefore comes before scheduling, and promises of the same fixed package for everyone should be treated with caution.
Why a course of sessions is needed
Laser targets hair most effectively during the active growth phase. Only some hairs are in this phase at each visit; others become suitable targets later. Spacing sessions allows the next growth cycle to emerge without unnecessarily frequent treatments.
The treatment area also affects timing. The face, underarms, legs, back and chest do not follow exactly the same schedule. Hair density, thickness and colour, skin phototype, previous hair removal methods and personal history also matter.
What is considered in the first assessment
Before the first treatment, we discuss the area, your goal, recent sun exposure, sensitivities, scarring and medication that may affect your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology highlights recent sunbathing, a tendency to scar and medication as information to share during your consultation.
Assessment is more than a formality. It determines whether the timing is right, which settings can be used and what preparation is needed. If there are active skin lesions, a strong tan or another concern, the session may be rescheduled.
When is progress visible?
Progress is assessed over time, rather than simply by the number of hairs visible immediately afterwards. We monitor hair density, texture and regrowth rate. Response varies by person and treatment area, so the initial plan may be adjusted based on the first sessions.
The goal is long-term reduction of unwanted hair growth, not an absolute promise that no hair will appear again. In some cases, less frequent maintenance sessions may be recommended. This is discussed transparently, without being presented as the same for everyone.
How do you support a consistent plan?
Follow the preparation instructions carefully, tell the team about any changes to your medication or health, and avoid tanning. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Do not change the intervals between sessions or use methods that remove hair from the root without consulting the team first.
A well-designed plan has a clear starting point, regular reassessment and realistic expectations. At Nous n Somma, the number and frequency of sessions are recommended only after a personal assessment.
